The Hennepin County Medical Examiner in Minneapolis, Minnesota, ruled the death of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, a homicide on Monday. Pretti died on January 24 after being shot multiple times by federal agents during an immigration operation.

According to the medical examiner’s report, Pretti died from multiple gunshot wounds at Hennepin Healthcare Hospital.

Several videos of the incident show officers surrounding the man, restraining him, and confiscating a weapon before shooting him multiple times while he was on the ground.

This case adds to a series of similar incidents in the city: on January 7, Renee Good, also 37, died from gunshot wounds inflicted by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, and her death was also ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office.

As ProPublica revealed last weekend, the agents responsible for the shooting are Jesús Ochoa of the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) and Raymundo Gutiérrez of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that both officers have been suspended from duty.

In response to intense public protests and demands from local legislators, the Department of Justice launched an investigation on Friday into possible civil rights violations in this case, which has raised concerns about the protocols used by federal forces in urban immigration operations.
